The lateral faces are rectangular and 140 centimeters long; between them are narrower, rectangular panels 51 centimeters wide. The orbiter weighs 2325 kilos, including 1423 kilos of propellant. Sixteen internal compartments contain the electronic equipment and the data systems. A flight data subsystem equipped with a 8192-bit memory makes it possible to reprogram Viking 2 the orbiter at will from the Earth ground control station. photo The orbiter's temperature is controlled by means of mobile shutters on 12 compartments. Four wing-like structures, each having two panels of photo electric cells, are attached to the orbiter's main body. These solar panels have a total surface of 14.53 square meters and are the orbiter's energy source. A liquid propellant motor, fueled by two tanks of monomethyl- hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, provides thrust of 136 kilos. Nitrogen is also used as the stabilizer gaz to control the orbiter's pitch and roll. MARS BETAT
